Our Story

Built by someone who
fought the same bill.

BirthAppeal was created by a parent who received an overbilled birth statement — and discovered that most families never know they can fight back.

My name is Brandon G. — and this is why I built BirthAppeal.

It started with my cousin. After delivering her baby, she received a hospital bill for over $20,000 for her own stay — and a separate bill for $13,000 for her daughter's. That was the first moment I understood that something was fundamentally wrong with how hospital birth billing works. The numbers weren't random. They were designed to be confusing.

Then it happened to my own family.

"When my wife and I had our first child, we received a bill that was over $5,000 more than it should have been. What followed wasn't a conversation about the errors — it was calls and emails asking us to set up a payment plan. They were eager to collect. No one mentioned the bill was wrong."

We had insurance. We had done everything right. And yet we were being quietly funneled toward paying a bill that no one bothered to verify. The hospital's billing department wasn't working against us — they just weren't working for us either. That distinction matters.

After that experience, I started talking to people. Friends. Family. Coworkers who had recently had children. What I kept hearing was the same thing over and over: they had no idea they could appeal. Nobody told them it was an option. Nobody explained that billing errors in maternity care are common — not the exception. They either paid the full amount, set up a payment plan, or let the debt sit in collections.

I wanted to be the help I wished my wife and I had. The help I wished my cousin had. Using the extensive research I've conducted into hospital billing practices, insurance regulations, and federal law — combined with my own lived experience when our first child was born — I created BirthAppeal as a resource for parents who feel like they've been financially taken advantage of and don't know where to start.

The help you deserved from the beginning.

BirthAppeal exists for one reason: to put the tools of financial advocacy into the hands of every parent who needs them — regardless of whether they have a lawyer, an HR department, or anyone in their corner.

Most families don't appeal their birth bills because no one tells them they can. The system isn't designed to make it easy. We built BirthAppeal to change that — a clear, accessible service that does the hard work of building your dispute for you, at a price that doesn't add to the financial pressure you're already under.

You shouldn't have to be an expert in medical coding to fight an error in your own hospital bill. That's what we're here for.
